All About Chihuahuas

Weight: Chihuahuas normally weigh between two and six pounds, and are the smallest breed of dogs in the world. The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize different weight categories, but the term “teacup” is commonly used to refer to puppies who will not weigh more than four pounds as adults while the term “toy“ is commonly used for puppies who will weigh between four and six pounds as adults. Although this is the norm, some may weigh more or less. A puppy weight chart is commonly used to predict adult weight.

Temperament: Chihuahuas are loving, playful, alert, loyal, and hardy. They make outstanding pets for many reasons. They naturally adapt themselves to your particular lifestyle, schedule and preferences. If you’re looking for a lap dog, family pet, companion, lil’ shadow, miniature watchdog, or a friend, you’ll find it all wrapped up in this little ball of fur.

Lifespan: Chihuahuas have longer life spans than any other breed. They normally live well into the teens, while some reach their early twenties. Keep in mind that taking good care of your pet may add years to his/her life.

Varieties: Chihuahuas can be any color and come in both long and short coat, sometimes from the same litter. They are also described by their head type as deer face or apple head. The deer face refers to a narrow face and slightly longer nose (the taco bell look) while the apple head refers to a broad dome-like head with a shorter nose.

Pure-breed: An AKC registered dog is guaranteed purebred. Our puppies come with a full registration (unless otherwise noted), which means that the new owner may register offspring if desired. Keep in mind that if no papers come with the puppy, there is no guarantee that the puppy is what the owners claim.

Little Known Facts: *Chihuahuas make great watchdogs, partially because of their extraordinary hearing capabilities. Whether or not its actually been proven, a local newspaper article several years ago reported that a Chihuahua can hear a man’s heartbeat from fifteen feet away. *People with asthma and/or allergies usually do remarkably well with a purebred Chihuahua, but you should still consult a doctor. *Chihuahuas make excellent travelers because they can easily go anywhere with you even on vacation . They have been seen riding along on horses, 18-wheelers, and Harleys!
